Lake Tahoe RV Camping Tips

Campgrounds are usually only open between mid-May and mid-October, so be sure to check the campsite’s schedules and make reservations before you visit.

Plan your route before you set out on the road, but be flexible — in case of road closures. There is limited cell service in the area, so keep a print map on hand for when you hit dead service zones.

While camping, be aware that bears are commonly found in the area. Pack up your food when you are not eating and lock everything up when you are not around.

Even in the hottest parts of summer, nights can be cold. Pack jackets and other warm layers with you when you visit the area, especially if you plan on being outside at night.

The lake is about 6,225 feet in elevation, and the surrounding mountains are even higher. The high elevation can cause people to experience dry skin and eyes. Consider packing lotion, saline nasal spray, and artificial tear drops to avoid nose bleeds, dry skin, and dry eyes. Moreover, carry water with you at all times and don’t forget the sunscreen!

Fishing: Lake Tahoe is renowned for its fishing. You can try your luck at catching trout, bass, and other species. Be sure to check local fishing regulations and get the necessary permits.

Scenic Drives: Take a scenic drive around the lake to enjoy breathtaking views. The Lake Tahoe Loop is a popular route that offers plenty of photo opportunities.

Wildlife Watching: Keep an eye out for wildlife such as deer, bears, and various bird species. Remember to respect their space and observe from a safe distance.

Campfires and Stargazing: Many campgrounds allow campfires in designated fire rings. Enjoy the warmth of a campfire in the evening and take advantage of the clear mountain skies for stargazing.

Biking: Lake Tahoe has a variety of biking trails, from easy paved paths to challenging mountain bike trails. You can rent bikes locally if you don't bring your own.

Visit Nearby Attractions: Explore nearby attractions like the Tahoe Rim Trail, Vikingsholm Castle, and the historic town of Truckee.

Relax and Unplug: Camping is an excellent opportunity to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature. Enjoy the serenity of the outdoors, read a book, or simply sit by the campfire and unwind.

Leave No Trace: Always practice Leave No Trace principles to protect the environment and preserve the natural beauty of Lake Tahoe for future generations.

Before you go, make sure to check the weather forecast, bring appropriate gear, and be prepared for varying weather conditions, as Lake Tahoe's elevation can lead to rapid changes in weather. Additionally, be mindful of any fire restrictions or bear safety guidelines in the area you choose to camp. Enjoy your camping trip in Lake Tahoe!
