Durham, along with its neighbor, Raleigh, has enough things to see and do to keep any family occupied for a very long vacation. You will be amongst the six million people that visit this quaint, artsy town each year. Located in the heart of North Carolina, Durham is populated with a little over a quarter of a million people. They live there for good reason — it`s a very creative and entrepreneurial community. The temperatures are pleasant year round, and the activities are endless.
Outside the city limits of Durham is some of the most beautiful countryside one could hope to find. There are several RV parks where you can camp for as long as you desire, as this is a popular way to travel in this part of the United States.
\Just 129 miles away from the Raleigh Durham area is the Tryon Palace in New Bern. This restored mansion was the capital of the colony of North Carolina during the Revolutionary War, and present day serves as an educational reminder of those tumultuous times. There are tours of the main mansion and gardens, and self-guided tours of the kitchen and stable. The tours are made more enjoyable by guides who dress up in the garb of the era, and answer any questions you may have about those times past. While you`re there, be sure to sample the local, fresh seafood and the beautiful waterfront views. These are things that first lured settlers to this part of the state. To get there, just take Highway 70 East to New Bern.
\Just a two-hour trip on I-40 W from Raleigh Durham is Mount Airy. For the fans of the Andy Griffith Show, this is the real Mayberry RFD; the very town that Griffith based his show on. Enjoy the vibrant Main Street, which continually draws in the nostalgia with the monthly "cruise-in" for classic cars. This quaint town rests near the Virginia state line. It is also a great stepping off point to the wineries of the Yadkin Valley Wine Trail.
