If you decide to get on the road for a great daytrip, you may consider heading to Kalamazoo, Michigan for a visit to the world-renowned Air Zoo. Here you will not only find over 50 rare and historic aircraft, you will also enjoy amusement park-type rides, several full motion flight simulators, films in the 4-D Missions Theater (where you will experience being dropped into middle of a WWII bombing mission), along with several other fun activities for the whole family. The beauty of this adventure is that you can ride the rides and simulators as much as you like, as the unlimited pass is included in the price of admission. While in Kalamazoo, be sure to visit the Kalamazoo valley Museum, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, the Kalamazoo Nature Center and the Markin Glen County Park. To get to Kalamazoo from South Bend, simply take I-80 E and US-131 N. It`s a 75-mile journey, and well worth it.
Another great adventure from South Bend is to Harbor Country, where you will find eight great towns, and one Great Lake! Harbor Country is the name that is designated for the southwesterly portion of Berrien County, Michigan. It combines the best of two worlds; the beautiful white sands of the Lake Michigan`s beaches to the gorgeous, lush countryside. There is fun and relaxation to be found year `round as you combine the rustic country charm with the sophisticated restaurants, shops and galleries. The towns that make up this part of the state are Michiana, Grand Beach, New Buffalo, Union Pier, Lakeside, Harbert, Sawyer and Three Oaks. These communities are separate, yet closely knit. They encompass a stretch of about 15 miles along the shores of Lake Michigan, and about 6 miles inland. To get there from South Bend, travel 34.7 miles west on US-12.
Just 30 miles from South Bend via US-20 and IN-19S will get you to Amish Acres in Nappanee, Indiana. Here you will enjoy the simple life, as experienced by the Amish People. This cultural attraction was created from a working 80-acre Old Order Amish farm. It`s listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and will provide you and your family with an enlightenment and education about what it`s like to be a member of the Amish community. Take a guided tour of the farm and the farmhouse, take a horse and buggy ride, watch intriguing craft demonstrations and enjoy the family style dining. There`s wine tasting at the Tasting Loft, and great productions at the Round Barn Theater.
